John Merrill was Northeast Asia Division Chief in the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research and has been a Professorial Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). He has held teaching and research positions at Georgetown University, George Washington University, the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Lafayette College, Korea University, and the University of Delaware. In addition to numerous journal articles, Merrill has authored several books, including Korea: The Peninsular Origins of the War, 1945-1950 (University of Delaware Press, 1989). He has an M.A. in East Asian Studies from Harvard and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Delaware.
