U.S.–Korea Relations: Celebrating 125 Years of Friendship One hundred twenty–five years of friendship between the United States and Korea were celebrated on May 21 in cooperation with Korus House and the Sejong Society of D.C. Festivities incldued an afternoon of history, ceremony, music and the introduction of the sapsaree dogs, a unique breed, which has been designated a national treasure of Korea.
John Endicott, a noted scholar at Georgia Institute of Technology described the colorful history between the two countries since they negotiated the first treaty of amity in 1882 signed by Commodore R.W. Shufeldt, Shin Chen and Chin Hong Chi. Carl Gershman, president of the National Endowment for Democracy, gave the keynote marking the strength of the relationship and calling on more nations to follow Korea's path to democracy.
